Nirvana will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
The legendary grunge band will receive the career-spanning honor during this year’s ceremony on Sept. 27.
Since frontman Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear have occasionally reunited for special performances with guest singers.
The bandmates most recently performed together in 2025 at the FireAid benefit concert, where they teamed up with a rotating group of guest vocalists.
It has not yet been announced whether Nirvana’s surviving members will perform at the VMAs while accepting the honor.
The 2026 MTV VMAs will broadcast live from Los Angeles on Sept. 27 on CBS, with the ceremony also airing on MTV and streaming on Paramount+. A host for this year’s show has not yet been announced.
