Remember Eminem's 2000 hit "Stan?"
The song was about an obsessive Eminem fan that kept writing to him and eventually killed himself over the obsession. It was pretty twisted, but a big hit and the song that introduced the world to singer/songwriter Dido.
Well now because of the track, the word "Stan" is now in the Oxford Dictionary!
It's not described as a guy's name but as both a noun and a verb! Both uses describes an overzealous fan of a particular musician or group.
As a noun it says:
“An overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity – ‘he has millions of Stans who are obsessed with him and call him a rap god."
As a verb it says:
“Be an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity – ‘y’all know I Stan for Katy Perry, so I was excited to see the artwork for her upcoming album.‘”
So there you have it! You can now freely use the word as a noun or verb. Do you know anyone that would be referred to as a "Stan?"
